Yacht racing is becoming ever popular in the world today. There are now some very high-profile yacht racing events that are visited by thousands of people each year. They are naturally designed to move fast in shallow water so most of the races do not have to take place out in the open sea.

Unlike the also popular powerboat racing, yacht racing takes a lot more skill and a full team is required to steer the large vessel in the right direction. It is a very skillful sport that requires a lot of training and determination to get right.

One of the most popular types of yachts used in yacht racing is the catamaran. This type of vessel is ideally built for racing. It is made using very light materials and it just seems to glide across the water’s surface as if it wasn’t touching it at all. This means it can very quickly build up speed and make for fantastic racing. The catamaran racing takes place in a lot of harbors usually around the course set out and marked by buoys. These types of races usually involve 10 to 20 of these yachts who race around the course and try to be the first one home past the finishing line. There are usually quite a few of these races around different venues in the world to determine the final winner.

Offshore yacht racing is also becoming very popular. There are now even trans-Atlantic races that really test the skills of each individual crew. These will obviously involve larger yachts that are made specifically to cope with the harsh conditions in some of the most challenging seas.
There have also been a few high-profile cases of yacht racing around the world by individuals. Ellen Mccarther being one of them, who managed to sail all around the world on her own in a time that has yet not been beaten. If yacht racing is something that appeals to you then there are many places you can contact for more information. The first step maybe is to visit your local yacht club if you have one. Try to get a first trip arranged to see if you really want to take things further.
