Yachting: The Lessons That Can be Passed Down through Generations
April 24, 2009 – 3:44 pm Guest Writer - ReflectionsMy father grew up learning about yachting and all the skills, lingo and advice he needed from my grandfather. As my father got older and matured, he never forgot these lessons and thus, I have had the benefit of learning the ways from my own father and my grandfather. There is something magical about the lessons and wisdom that can be passed down through the generations. Yachting entails something that no other activity or hobby does. From teaching someone to throw a baseball, sew a dress or even ride a bike, there is something so inherently different about yachting. Learning from my grandfather about yachting taught me much more than just how to run a boat, it taught me about life.
The lessons learnt from being on a boat can be related to so many other aspects of life. You learn to appreciate the things you have, you gain time to spend with family and the people you love and most importantly, the calmness of the sea is contagious. While I saw my grandfather stressed or my father upset about work, it all seemed to disappear in a heartbeat when we were out on the water. Money, work, mortgage payments, fights with friends all seem irrelevant on the open see and this is what I saw from my grandfather. No matter how stressful life was or what problems were thrown at him, on the yacht there were only a few things that mattered. Family, love, fun and the wind.
